Celebrating Community Through Art at Hutchins' New City Hall

TurningArt recently partnered with the City of Hutchins to incorporate unique artwork into the new City Hall Campus. This lively civic space, designed to be a focal point and destination for the public, celebrates local heritage and fosters community connection. The collaborative project incorporates work from several local artists who developed large-scale installations that encapsulate Hutchins’ spirit and welcome residents and visitors into the space, communicating a strong message about the city’s values and vibrant future.

TurningArt was also able to attend the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling the new campus on September 10, joining artists and community members who gathered to present and appreciate this new space.

From Aubrey Thorp, the Art Advisor

“For this unique project in the City of Hutchins, we aimed to create artwork that feels deeply connected to the place. Inspired greatly by the prompt “where you stand determines what you see”, we wanted each piece to tell a story and inspire visitors to connect with not only the space but the city’s rich cultural heritage. Every installation showcases something special about the city’s history, people, and landscape, all uniting to tell a cohesive story throughout the campus.

A prime example of this community-centric approach is the multi-panel mosaic at the South Entry by J Muzacz. This piece honors the knowledge of the area’s indigenous people and invites viewers to appreciate the natural beauty of our surroundings. It showcases the diversity and significance of regional medicinal plants, flowers, and native crops, celebrating what the land can offer. The abstract design encourages creative thinking, alluding to the idea of a landscape while subverting expectations. This allows the viewing experience to be unique to each individual, as they see different representations in the design.

This project demonstrates how impactful public art can be. It completely transforms a place, turning it into an experience and influencing how people interact with and remember the space. The art here at Hutchins City Hall communicates its role as a lively cultural landmark where art and community come together."

From Wanda Randle, Director of Community Services & Park Programs for the City of Hutchins:

“For our new City Hall, we wanted artwork that reflects Hutchins' character and provides a real sense of belonging. Each installation represents a piece of our story, from recognizing the region's heritage to celebrating the natural landscape. The result is inspiring and welcoming, offering something meaningful and beautiful for everyone who visits.

Working with TurningArt was an excellent experience. Aubrey and Erin helped us bring our vision to life, activating the space and connecting it to our community by partnering with local artists. It was especially significant to see how the project opened doors for local artists and brought life to the space through the unique collaborative process. Witnessing their ideas take shape on such a grand scale, knowing these pieces will greet generations of residents and visitors, is an incredible feeling.

Our City Hall is much more than a government building, and the new art program signifies that. It is a lively community space that showcases Hutchins’ pride, history, and bright future.”
